Food & growth

Dobermans grow fast and are prone to bloat, so how you feed matters as much as what you feed. Here are meal plans by age, the two-puppy feeding setup and a weigh-in tracker for both pups.

Feeding schedule by age

Set the pups' birthdays on the Den page and their current stage is highlighted here.

8–12 weeks
4 meals

Small, evenly spaced meals, for example 7am, 11am, 3pm and 7pm. Tiny tummies, high energy needs.

3–6 months
3 meals

Drop the midday meal once they handle bigger portions well. Portions go up quickly in this stage.

6–12 months
2–3 meals

Growth slows down. Keep them lean, adjusting portions to how their body looks, not just what the bag says.

They're here
12–18 months
2 meals

Switch to adult food around 12–18 months (ask your vet). Keep feeding twice a day for life, which helps prevent bloat.

Portions: start with the bag's chart for their expected adult weight (roughly 75–100 lb for a male, 60–90 lb for a female), then adjust every week or two based on the rib check below. Boys usually need noticeably more than girls.

🥣What to feed

  • A large-breed puppy formula labeled AAFCO-complete for "growth, including large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult)".
  • Controlled calcium and calories help joints grow at a steady pace. Faster isn't better for big breeds.
  • No extra calcium or supplements unless your vet prescribes them. That includes "for the ears."
  • Treats and training rewards should be no more than about 10% of daily calories. Use part of their kibble for training.
  • Changing foods? Mix the new food in over 7–10 days to avoid upset stomachs.
  • Fresh water all day. Pick bowls up for an hour or two before bedtime during potty training.

👫Feeding two at once

  • Feed them separately, each in their own crate or at stations across the room. Nobody steals, nobody guards.
  • Same times every day. Put the bowl down, and pick it up after 15–20 minutes whether it's empty or not.
  • Feeding apart is how you notice when one pup goes off their food, often the first sign something's wrong.
  • Ask for a "sit" and "wait" before each bowl goes down. That's free training twice a day.
  • Different appetites are normal. Kingslee will likely out-eat Roman as he grows.

⚠️Bloat (GDV): the Doberman food rule

Deep-chested breeds like Dobermans are at higher risk of bloat, where the stomach fills with gas and can twist. It's an emergency.

  • Feed 2+ smaller meals a day, never one big one.
  • Use slow-feeder bowls or puzzle feeders if they inhale their food.
  • No hard play, running or zoomies for about an hour before and after meals.
  • Avoid gulping huge amounts of water right after exercise.
  • Go to the emergency vet right away for a swollen or tight belly, retching with nothing coming up, drooling, restlessness or pacing.
  • Ask your vet about preventive gastropexy (often done with spay/neuter).

Body check: run your hands down their sides

Too thin

Ribs, spine and hip bones easy to see from across the room. Add food.

Just right ✓

Ribs easy to feel under a thin layer but not jutting out. A clear waist from above and a tuck from the side.

Too heavy

Hard to feel ribs, no waist. Extra weight stresses growing joints, so cut back about 10%.
